Got Discipline?

In 1 Timothy 4:7, Paul told Timothy, “Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness.” If you’re like me, you struggle with discipline. Honestly, my spirit is willing, but my flesh is so weak. My flesh would rather watch TV than read my Bible … surf the web than pray … scroll through Facebook than memorize Scripture. But I know if I give in to the flesh, I’ll be a spiritual UNDER-achiever. I need discipline to rise above. Now the word for discipline in 1 Timothy 4:7 is the Greek word gumnazo, from which we get the word “gymnasium.” It means to train like an athlete. To be spiritually fit, we must train ourselves. God wants us to meet Him in the gym every day for a productive, encouraging, and enriching workout with Jesus. God will be faithful to make us spiritually strong if we will be faithful to the hard work of saying no to the flesh and yes to the Spirit, of doing the things that are necessary to develop a deep and genuine walk with the King of kings and Lord of lords. Now that’s REAL HOPE.
