The Blessed Insult

When I was a kid, I used to argue and fight with my brothers and sisters. One of our ‘go to’ lines in our war of words was this annoying little reply, “I know you are, but what am I?” Every insult was turned back on the insulter with that juvenile response.  In the life and ministry of Jesus, His enemies never ceased to attack His holy name, calling Him everything in the book and worse. Yet, one of the insults turned out to be one the greatest things ever said about Him. I call it the “Blessed Insult.” They said that Jesus was "a friend of tax-gathers and sinners.” They thought it was horrible that a Rabbi would befriend the lowly riff raff, but He did. And He still does. Jesus is a friend of sinners … He did not come to condemn us, He came to save us. He is not against us, He is for us. Certainly, He is not for our sinful ways, because they lead to misery, chains, and death. But, He is for us! And He wants us separate from our old way of life and tell the world that Jesus loves them, too. Now that offers REAL HOPE.
