Forgiveness is Not Reconciliation

Are you a “forgiving” person? The Scripture is clear on this subject. God commands us to be forgiving, but sometimes we don’t understand what it really means to forgive. Forgiveness is not the same thing as reconciliation. Forgiveness is what we as Christian grant to those who wrong us, whether they ask for it or not. It is unilateral. We choose to forgive so that we can be set free from the prison of bitterness. Reconciliation, on the other hand, is bilateral. The offender must make things right with the offended if there is to be reconciliation. It takes two to tango, and it takes two to reconcile. Are you dealing with a broken relationship in your life, perhaps estranged from a friend, a loved one, or a family member? Search your heart. Make certain you have truly forgiven them for the hurt they caused you. And if you were complicit in the hurt, be the bigger person, apologize and seek restoration. It is there where you will find REAL HOPE.
